Baidu's PP-OCRv6 packs 50-language OCR into tiny models
The latest release of PaddlePaddle's optical character recognition suite spans models from 1.5M to 34.5M parameters under an Apache 2.0 license.
Baidu has published PP-OCRv6, the newest iteration of its widely used PaddleOCR toolkit, on Hugging Face. The release covers optical character recognition across 50 languages and, notably, does so with models that stay remarkably small — spanning roughly 1.5 million to 34.5 million parameters.
That compact footprint is the headline. While much of the field is racing toward ever-larger vision-language systems, PP-OCRv6 leans in the opposite direction, targeting workloads where a lightweight, deployable pipeline matters more than raw scale. Models this size can run on modest hardware and edge devices, which is exactly where document parsing, invoice reading, and text extraction tend to live in production.
Why it matters
OCR remains one of the most practical and heavily deployed applications of computer vision, and the PaddleOCR line has become a default choice for many developers building document workflows.
