JD.com Releases Open-Source Bilingual Image Editor
The new JoyAI-Image-Edit model allows for instruction-based photo manipulation in both English and Chinese under a permissive Apache 2.0 license.
Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com, through its open-source initiative, has released JoyAI-Image-Edit, a diffusion-based model designed for instruction-guided image editing. The model is notable for its ability to understand prompts in both English and Chinese, making it accessible to a broad, global user base.
The model is built to perform two primary types of modifications. It can execute local edits, such as adding or replacing an object within a scene, as well as global style transformations that alter the entire image's aesthetic or the main subject's appearance. This dual capability makes it a versatile tool for creative and practical applications.
Why it matters
While open-source text-to-image models have become widespread, high-performing, instruction-based image editors are less common. By providing a bilingual tool under the commercially-friendly Apache 2.0 license, JD.com is lowering the barrier for developers and researchers to build sophisticated visual editing applications. The model and examples are available on Hugging Face for community use and further development.
